The search for health care is unique to each individual and is frequently influenced by the current health status and socio-economic situation. The search may be initiated by the individual themselves or a family member or an unrelated non-professional care giver. The nature and intensity of the inquiry varies by stage of the diagnosis.
It is quite common for people to “search” (Google) symptoms before contacting their primary care physician (if they have one) in person or virtually. There are multiple sources of information on the internet including the apps and portals of some of the large health insurance companies and large health systems.
People are most confused about where to start. Below are some suggestions to prepare oneself during the initial stages of an undiagnosed episode that is not an injury or a recurring chronic condition
(Disclaimer: the following inquiries are not to be treated as a substitute for professional diagnostics)
- Has this happened before?
- When did the symptoms start?
- Was there a triggering event?
- Make note of symptoms that are cause for concern (e.g. aches, rashes, diarrhea, cough, fever, vomiting, bleeding, breathing, abnormal heart rate, anxiety)
- How long has one been experiencing the symptoms?
- What is considered life threatening emergency?
- What care does one need?
- Are there home-based remedies for immediate (temporary) relief?
- Are there over the counter medications that could help?
- Could this be an infection related and is it infectious?
- Where is the nearest retail clinic, pharmacy, hospital ER?
- When to seek guidance from a professional care provider?
- Should one contact a primary care physician or a specialist?
- Has anyone in the family or circle of friends experienced similar symptoms
